and Breakfast Scheme for Tourists by MTDC
MTDC
has constructed holiday resorts and hotels at various places
of tourist interest in the state. However, it is not possible,
from a finance and administrative point of view, for MTDC or
the private sector to make available such facilities at all
places identified for tourism development. This is mainly because
the visitor influx at these locations occurs either during the
season only, or is limited to certain months. Due to this, tourist
complexes - particularly those situated along the inner borders
of the state - are commercially not viable from the point
of view of investment and expenditure for maintenance. Tourists
intending to visit sites outside Mumbai or Pune therefore generally
find that the accommodation, if available, is not up to expected
standards.
Due
to the efforts of MTDC, the number of local, out-of-state and
foreign tourists is slowly increasing. It is likely that visitors
may start focussing on religious and/or, historically significant
places in Maharashtra. It is, however, not profitable for the
state to incur expenditure on the construction of tourist complexes
at these locations. A survey by MTDC shows that there are a
number of apartments/houses which are vacant or not fully utilized
by their owners/landlords, who may make them available on rent.
These can ideally be utilized by tourists on a paying-guest
basis, particularly where traffic is seasonal. With this, over
the near future, it will not be necessary for the government
to incur expenditure on the construction of tourist complexes
at these sites. The facility will create avenues for self-employment
for local people - owner or his relatives. Tourists will also
benefit, with good, hygienic and comfortable food and lodging,
as well as the opportunity to experience life with a local family
and participate in their traditions and customs. The system,
if properly implemented, will also serve the broad objective
of national integration and regional exchange.
